web.config settings ignored

Hi,
I am working with IIS 6.0 and Visual Studio.NET 2003, .NET Framework 1.1
It seems that the web.config file is being completely ignored. No settings d
one in this file like 'authentication mode', sessionState timeout, ... are h
aving any effect.
Otherwise my deployed web application seems to be working fine.
Does anyone have any clues as to what I am missing?The DIR that the site is in isn't set as a Virtual Directory Application in
IIS.
